Gardner family papers, 1772-1915.

Papers of the Gardner Family of Wenham and Boston, Mass., 1772-1915. Includes deeds and family correspondence of merchants and ship owners John, Samuel P., John L. Sr. and Jr., George, George A., Joseph P., and George P. Gardner, and of Rebecca R. (Lowell), and Catherine E. (Peabody) Gardner, among others. Also included are a few letters written by Isabella Stewart Gardner and many other letters that make references to her. Timothy Pickering is a frequent, early correspondent. Collection includes some papers (1805-13) of Boston attorney Francis Blanchard. Among correspondence are letters written home from Europe by various Gardner family members at different times. Bound vols. include two chronological memoranda books of John L. and John L., Jr., 1846-99, noting sales of ship cargoes, mostly pepper, coffee, tea, saltpeter, and sugar; a scrapbook of John L., Jr., 1846, mostly containing engravings; and a letterbook (1864-86) with copies of letters among John L, Sr., John L., Jr., Joseph P., George A., and later George P. Gardner.

Timothy Pickering (b. July 17, 1745, Salem, MA–d.
